Empurau : The Most expensive fish in Malaysia

I received this article from a friend via e-mail :
Perhaps ikan kembong goreng crispy with sambal belacan good enough for us poor??
Or perhaps a good Tilapia or a Patin would taste better!!


A Fish Fit for the King
This is the most expensive fish in Malaysia and is only found in Sarawak. It's called the Empurau Fish and it cost RM 500.00 per kilogram. I (definitely not me, the writer) tasted the fish only once at my friend's restaurant in Selayang Jaya. Never tasted fresh water fish that good..

The picture was taken from Photo Malaysia by one of the photographers and he said that the fish weighs 25 kilograms so it means that fish costs RM12,500.00 in the market.

You may say it's crazy, but in Japan, some tunas cost a few hundred thousand dollars. And yes there are people still willing to pay for such delicacies.



Homecooked Asam Laksa

Whenever we balik kampung to my in-laws' place in Taiping, my 2nd sister-in-law, (my hubby's sis-in-law) would cook our fvourite foods such as Asam Fish, Curry Ayam, Rendang, Local kuih-muih, etc. This trip, she cooked Asam Laksa for us. It was indeed delicious and yummy yummy! My girls kept eating and eating. We could eat chunks of sardine and ikan kembung!! What a dish! I even drank the laksa soup till to the last drop. Too bad, I didn't have the recipe cos' by the time we reached her house, she had finished cooking. So, our duty was to eat and eat and EAT!!!

Yi Soh, thanks so much for your nice dinner. We love you!!!! Muaksss..... muakkksss... muakksss....!!!!

Eggs...Can You Really Eat Them?

For years we have been told to stop eating eggs. Why?Americans are often recommended to eat a low cholesterol diet to lower their cholesterol levels and reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease. Eggs have gotten a bad rap in the past because they are considered to be a high cholesterol food due to the cholesterol content of the yolk. But now they are discovering something entirely different.


LDL and HDL
Over time, research started to differentiate between HDL (high density lipoprotein) and LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol. HDL is known as "good cholesterol" because it protects against heart attacks, while LDL is known as "bad cholesterol" because it creates plaque that can clog arteries, contributing to heart attack and stroke. Research has shown that there are different types of LDL cholesterol, not all of which are responsible for clogging arteries.

In some people egg cholesterol promotes the formation of large LDL cholesterol particles, which are better than small LDL particles and do not cause plaque formation (narrowing in blood vessels).

The NHANES III observational study evaluated over 27,000 people and found that people who ate 4 or more eggs per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than people who ate less than one egg per week.

Today even though we Americans have cut our egg consumption in half there has not been a decline in heart disease.

Eggs Are A Near Perfect Food
The yolk contains lecithin, which aids in fat assimilation. Eggs actively raise the level of HDL and they have the most perfect protein components of any food. Besides providing all eight essential protein building amino acids, a large whole, fresh egg offers about six to seven grams of protein and five grams of fat (with about 1.5 grams of it saturated), which comes in handy to help in the absorption of all the egg's fat-soluble vitamins. One egg also serves up around 200 milligrams of brain-loving cholesterol and contains the valuable vitamins A, K, E, D, B-complex and minerals iron, phosphorus, potassium and calcium.

Eggs are an ancient food. Man has always eaten the eggs of all animals that produced them: chicken, duck, goose, turtles. Additionally, eggs are a wonderful source of nutrition and can greatly strengthen your health. Eggs provide a vital source of protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, folic acid, phosphorus, sulfur, and the adrenal-building minerals: choline, sodium, and potassium.

Health Benefits of Eggs
Keep your brain healthy. Choline is an important nutrient found in egg yolks that is required by the body to keep cell membranes normal and healthy as they function.Choline, another egg-nutrient, is a fatty substance found in every living cell and is a major component of our brain. Additionally, choline helps break up cholesterol deposits by preventing fat and cholesterol from sticking to the arteries. So the bottom line is, don't be chicken about eating eggs, especially the cholesterol-rich yolks!
Prevent Alzheimer's disease. Phosphatidycholine is a nutrient in eggs essential for concentration, attention, and retaining information in the memory to ultimately prevent Alzheimer's disease.
Improve heart health. Homocysteine is a substance in the body that can damage the blood vessels and leave you at risk for heart disease. Luckily, the choline found in eggs will convert homocysteine into harmless material. Eggs can alsodecrease your risk for heart attacks and strokethanks to the anti-clotting agent found in yolks.
Enhance your vision. The lutein found in eggs can help prevent macular degeneration.Egg yolks are the richest source of two superstar carotenoids-lutein and zeaxanthin. Not only are bright yellow yolks loaded with these fat-soluble antioxidant nutrients, they are more bioavailable than those found in vegetables, corn and most supplements.
Aid in fat assimilation. Eggs yolks contain lecithin to help break down fats.

So don't be chicken about eating eggs, especially the cholesterol-rich yolks!

Eating Healthy Eggs
It is extremely important to get eggs from a farm where the chickens are free to roam and not fed any antibiotics or chemicals. Without a doubt, fresh, pastured eggs are superior in taste and nutrition to conventionally raised commercially available varieties.

Unfortunately, commercial chicken farms today pack 500,000 animals into close quarters where they feed them genetically modified (GM) grains and emphasize production over health, not to mention the inhumanity of it. These conditions create sick chickens that lay sick eggs. You don't ever want to eat these poor quality eggs anyway. They may not be contaminated with salmonella, but the eggs aren't fit to eat. Commercial eggs have much lower levels of essential omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients.

The best way to prepare eggs is "over easy" (with a soft runny yolk) in organic coconut oil. You never want to overcook proteins, or they become difficult to digest. In spite of the popular myth that egg white omelets are good for you, the yellow yolk has the most valuable nutrition and is easier to digest than the white. It is best to combine eggs with lots of alkaline vegetables (especially fermented) and some Celtic sea salt to balance their acidic nature.

If you find eggs difficult to digest try eating them with cultured vegetables and only the yolk. Once you have built up your inner ecosystem, many foods you could not eat before will be well tolerated and you can starting eating them again.

Don't Wash Fruits With Salt

Using salt to wash fruits and vegetables is worse.

Salt is sodium chloride. Therefore, washing fruits and vegetables with salt will make pesticides more stable. Fruits and vegetables should be washed with water first, then clean with water again by adding a little low gluten flour (or starch). This will remove the pesticides. 


A test done in the Inspection Agency pointed out: salt compound will stabilize pesticides. It is better off to let the vegetables sit at room temperature for half a day, then rinse with water. The advertisement "Washing vegetables with salt is healthy" is incorrect.
A teacher at the Food Engineering Department said: salt makes pesticides more stable due to chemical bonds. Pesticide residues in vegetables will be locked in. Therefore, pesticides in vegetables should be removed by rinsing with water several times. Do not add salt to wash vegetables ......!
In one nutrition class, Professor of Medicine in Taipei (now also a hospital clinical dietitian), has strong criticism of the misleading ads and wonder why no one ever stop it. Disclosure of such inaccurate information happened quite often, but no action was taken to stop it.... She hopes the public can have accurate medical knowledge.

WASABI Is Kidney & Liver-Killer

Wasabi is Japanese horseradish. It is most famous in form of a green paste used as condiment for sashimi (raw seafood) and sushi. However, wasabi is also used for many other Japanese dishes.
Wasabi is a root vegetable that is grated into a green paste. In supermarkets, wasabi is widely available as a paste or in powder form. Wasabi powder has to be mixed with water to become a paste. Wasabi has a strong, hot flavour which dissipates within a few seconds and leaves no burning aftertaste in one's mouth.

Many "wasabi" powder and paste products that are available in supermarkets (and even some restaurants) contain only very little or no real wasabi at all and are made of coloured horseradish instead. This is due to the fact that cultivation of real wasabi is relatively difficult and expensive.

這種化學哇沙必部分含有重金屬,雖然沒有超過標準,但醫師提醒不要多吃。
走到傳統漁市場,一陣嗆味撲鼻而來,仔細一看,原來是賣生魚片的攤位在調
哇沙必,
老闆娘說她用的是山葵粉,因為這種粉便宜又大碗,50元/包,
就可以調成好幾百小包,一般市場小吃店甚至餐廳都喜歡用山葵粉,
只是用粉調出來的沾醬,為什麼味道特別濃嗆?

這裡頭到底含有什麼成分?
記者一路追蹤到食品行,結果店家給的答案很驚人。
業者表示:「我是怕說這會加化學的東西,加減都會,我們說實話,
因為它這種東西有加工過,妳聽得懂我的意思嗎?」
雖然外包裝上標示裡頭的內容物有山葵、香料以及合成色素,不過專家質疑,
這根本就是化學合成的哇沙必,因為台灣的山葵是不可能冷凍乾燥做成粉。
師大化學教授吳家誠指出:
「它裡面的標示只標示出原料,並沒有告訴我們實際上是什麼化學成分,
它很可能用這些原料,當然實際上要摻一些這種化學的這個成分,
才會得到它這種有哇沙米辛辣的那種味道。」
記者拿[山葵][粉]去化驗,結果檢驗出重金屬成分有銅鉛以及砷等,
到底真假哇沙必要怎麼分辨?
其實很簡單,一滴碘酒就可以知道答案。
生化博士陳耀寬指出:
「我們調和好之後,拿家裡用的碘酒滴一滴在上面,經過 一兩 分鐘,
這個褐色的碘酒,如果變成[藍黑色]的,表示它裡面有澱粉成分存在,
那就是說它是用丙烯芥子油加上澱粉,混合而成的假哇沙必。」
化學合成哇沙必顏色鮮綠、味道濃嗆,
[純天然的顏色比較淡],半小時之後,香辣味就會消失,滴上碘酒也不容易變色。
至於山葵粉中的重金屬含量,長庚毒物科主任林杰樑強調,雖然重金屬含量
符合標準,但是肝腎不好的人,最好少碰,以免造成身體的負擔

In addition to the dangerous chemicals used to make carpets, couches, paint and dry wall, our homes can be filled with chemicals from everyday household items and products. NASA once partnered with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) to investigate which household plants best act as natural air purifiers and found 15 common plants that effectively improve air quality


Based on ease-of-care, attainability, appearance and effectiveness, here are our top six air purifying plants.

1. Bamboo Palm: According to NASA, it removes formaldahyde and is also said to act as a natural humidifier.
2. Snake Plant: Found by NASA to absorb nitrogen oxides and formaldahyde.
3. Areca Palm: One of the best air purifying plants for general air cleanliness.
4. Spider Plant: Great indoor plant for removing carbon monoxide and other toxins or impurities. Spider plants are one of three plants NASA deems best at removing formaldahyde from the air.

Recipes for a Green Clean

Homemade Glass Cleaner

Using isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar together makes a quickly evaporating spray glass and mirror cleaner that competes with national brands. This formula can also be used to give a nice shine to hard tiles, chrome, and other surfaces.If you use old newspaper to wipe your windows and mirrors, you’ll have the ultimate eco-friendly, streak-free shine!
1 cup rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol
1 cup water
1 Tbsp. vinegar

Mix together in a reusable spray bottle.

All-Purpose Disinfectant
2 tsp. borax
1/4 cup vinegar
3-4 cups hot water
15 drops tea tree oil
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle and mix well.
For extra cleaning power, add 1/4 tsp. liquid soap to the mixture.

Tub and Tile Scrub
1-2/3 cup baking soda
1/2 cup liquid soap
1/2 cup water
2 Tbsp. vinegar
Mix all ingredients, adding the vinegar after the other ingredients are well mixed. (if you add the vinegar too early it will react with the baking soda).
Immediately apply, wipe and scrub.

Toilet Cleaner
1 cup of borax
1/4 cup vinegar
Pour both borax and vinegar into the toilet before going to bed. In the morning, scrub and flush.

Furniture Polish
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup lemon juice
Mix into a bowl or spray bottle, and polish furniture with a soft cloth.
Wipe dry with another cloth.

Laundry Enhancers
To brighten laundry, add one half cup of strained lemon juice during the rinse cycle.
For a fabric rinse, add one quarter cup white vinegar during the washing machine’s rinse cycle to remove detergent completely from clothes.
To reduce the amount of laundry detergent you need to use, add baking soda or washing soda. These minerals soften the water, which increases the detergent’s power. For liquid detergent, add one half cup soda at the beginning of the wash. For powdered detergent, add one half cup soda during the rinse cycle.

"Jin Ji Du Li" EXERCISE

SIMPLE, BUT EFFECTIVE EXERCISE 
The essence of the exercise is that your "Eyes Must be Closed" when you are doing this exercise. You must practice the "Jin Ji Du Li" exercise with the eyes closed. This exercise was so simple and amazing that I thought I had to share it here.Here is the exercise:
Stand on one leg while your eyes are closed. That is all. Just try it right now, stop reading and stand up, close your eyes and try standing on one foot.If you are not able to stand for less than 10 seconds, it means that your body has degenerated to 60 to 70 years old level in other words, you may be only 40 years old, but your body has aged a lot faster.I myself & my husband tried this exercise when I read the mail. I thought “No, big deal, I’m sure we all can do this easily”. I was fooling myself, I’m glad I tried it because I discovered much to my surprise that while both of us could stand easily on one foot with our eyes open, trying the same thing with our eyes closed was another story! We just couldn’t keep our balance for more than two to three seconds before we started wobbling and hopping around.

You do not need to lift your leg high, if your internal organs are out of synch, even lifting your leg this bit will make you wobble.These Chinese are really very advanced in their knowledge of the human body. It was very heartening to know that frequent and regular practice can help you recover your sense of balance. In fact Chinese specialists suggest daily practice of Jin Ji Du Li for 1 minute, this helps prevent dementia/ FORGETFULNESS. You can try slightly closing both eyes while practicing Jin Ji Du Li, instead of completely closing them; in fact this is what the health specialist Zhong Li Ba Ren recommends.

Don't Use Dryer Blowers in Public Toilets !

 
Everyone in the cleaning industry has always been told that hand dryers in restrooms are not sanitary, they spread germs and bacteria around. I always thought that this just came from the paper companies because they are loosing sales to the hand dryers.

Hand dryers blow a lot of germs and bacteria around. You should take a look under the hand dryer next time you are in a restroom. There is a filter underneath the hand dryer that is supposed to be cleaned on a weekly basis. After checking,  it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. It had layers and layers of caked on gunk (disgusting).

Additionally, most of the older hand dryers in use (and even some of the newer ones) have an internal screen that should be changed every 1-2 weeks. Unfortunately, most are lucky if they are changed every 1-2 years. This sad reality is not only is a waste of energy, but also keeps more bacteria, germs, and viruses trapped in the dust on the screens, which then is blown directly onto our hands when we dry them. Since then I will not use hand dryers in restrooms. Now this is where the story gets really interesting.


Every time you use an air dryer, the amount of bacteria on your hands increases by 254% and on the finger pads by 194%.

The schools and universities that have had the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak recent years are being told by the health department that they have to take out all of their hand dryers and replace them with towel dispensers because the hand dryers are spreading disease.

**Please pass this along so everyone knows not to use hand dryers.

Symptoms and Signs of Heart Attack

Symptoms and signs of heart attack may include the following:

Chest pain or discomfort that is crushing, like a heavy weight; or squeezing, like a tight band around the chest; or an ache in the centre of the chest. The pain may radiate to the neck, jaw, shoulders, arms (especially the left arm), back, abdomen, face or teeth. The pain is persistent (longer than 15 minutes), and does not ease with rest. The pain is sometimes mistaken for indigestion.
Note that in some cases, heart attacks are painless.

Profuse sweating
Difficulty breathing
Feeling dizzy or light-headed
Nausea
Pale, clammy skin
The pulse may be fast or irregular.

The person may suddenly collapse and lose consciousness
First aid for heart attack!!!!!!!!! !!!
Encourage the person to sit still, with knees bent to ease strain on the heart.

Talk to him calmly and reassuringly, and loosen any tight clothing.
Monitor any changes in condition.

The person should take one aspirin withwater (Unless he is allergic to or unableto take aspirin). Aspirin helps to prevent blood clotting.
