Ginger Chicken Wine

Ginger Chicken Wine is usually labelled as confinement food for ladies during confinement period due to its efficiency in expelling wind and helps to strengthen the body.  There are a few versions of ginger chicken wine and for those who have yet to try the other version, do click at the links below for the recipe :

As I have been under the weather for few weeks due to bloated stomach and wind in my body, I decided to cook Ginger Chicken Wine.  Moreover, it's our family comfort food too.  This Ginger Chicken Wine is very easy to prepare and delectable too!  And yes, felt so much better after taking this but in addition, I too, boiled Ginger Lemongrass Tea.  It helps a lot too!

Ginger  Chicken Wine
(adapted from Boon's Secret Recipe 2 with some minor modifications in red)

Ingredients :
- half free ranged chicken (chopped into bite pieces and marinated for one hour)
- 1 bowl of old Bentong ginger (sliced)
- 2 whole bulbs of garlic (peeled and leave as whole)
- 300ml water (or more if you prefer extra gravy)
- 1 tbsp sesame oil

Marinade :
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1/2 tbsp cornflour

Seasoning A :
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp dark soy sauce

Seasoning B :
- 4 tbsp of Chinese cooking Wine (I used Hua Tiao Chiew)
- 4 tbsp of Ginger Wine (I used Eu Yang Sang)

Method  :
1)  Heat wok with one tablespoon of sesame oil.  Saute ginger and garlic till aromatic.
2)  Stir in marinated chicken and stir fry till chicken meat has turned whitish.
3)  Add water and seasoning (A).  Bring to boil and turn to low heat.  Simmer for 25 minutes or until the chicken meat is tender and cooked.
4)  Add in seasoning (B). Stir and mix well.
5)  Dish up and serve with hot steamed rice.
 Serve with hot steamed rice
Hope you all have a wonderful and healthy week ahead :)

  1. Hi Ivy, this chicken dish looks so good. I love ginger with meat dishes, really yummy and is a comfort food. Lemongrass drink is good too. My mum used to prepare this weekly but has stopped since my youngest brother passed away last Christmas. This drink is prepared for him. BTW where did you get this book?

    1. Hi Kimmy, yes, I love ginger and lemongrass too. Besides they are very healthy if added to any dishes. I got this book during the Book Fair 2014 but you can also get it from Popular Bookstore. If you can't get it in Penang, just let me know. I have his Vol. 1 book too. Love its simplicity and yummy dishes. Have a great week ahead and cheers :)

    1. Yes, Nava, normal old ginger will do too if you can't get Bentong ginger. Bentong ginger has greater aroma and taste. You can get it from the Chinese stall in the market and it's costly too! Hubby got a few pieces for me from the market and it cost RM16.00. Cooked twice only and HABIS!!!

  4. Hi Ivy,
So sorry to hear you have been under the weather. I do hope you are feeling better. I was smiling to myself as I read this post (of course I was wishing I could get a whiff of it also:) Chicken soup is a favorite "cure" around here for oh so many things. I thought it was interesting that clear across the world it is also thought of as a cure. It sure is a small world when it comes to chicken soup in any form:)

Of course your dish is not really a soup but in a way, it resembles it being the chicken is immersed in the soup:) I would LOVE to taste it. I am sure it is fragrant and oh so delicious! Thank you so much for sharing, Ivy...I do hope you feel better:)

  9. Hello Ivy, before I change gears, regret read of your tummy "bloated"...
Hey, you checked with your doctor? Maybe he'll shake your hands and say, "congratulations! You 3 months pregnant! And looks like twins". Holy Smoke! And hubby comes home from office, you make him iced coffee, ask him sit down, then tell him, "guess what the doctor said..."? Make sure hold his shoulders. And standby that ginger wine for him. Ha ha ha.
Then no more the Ginger chicken, but roast chicken, ha ha ha.

And that Sitiawan Ang ju....wow! I think I'll rosak my mom's name polish off 2 bowls. Looks so delicious! Ivy, you sure impress me with your this very original dishes. Used to go Sitiawan, Kampong Koh, Pantai Remis very often back in the '70s, never had this.
And your well taken pics always say more than 6 pages. You a very good photographer, Ivy!
Maybe next time wear your that red, slinky high slit cheong sum, pose beside the dishes, get daughter take the pics.
Then not only torture drop by here, but malam tidur susa datang, ha ha ha.
You keep a song in your heart, have a great week.
    Lee.

Ivy, dropping by here is just plain torture! And your this ginger chicken wine, even though I have never had it before, looks sinfully delicious. Bet it comes with a scent MIL will put hands around you, happy her son married you.
